Chelsea ‘close in’ on Jules Kounde transfer with spending set to smash £130million mark

Chelsea are on the verge of signing Jules Kounde from Sevilla as Thomas Tuchel continues his summer spending spree following the arrivals of Raheem Sterling and Kalidou Koulibaly.

Tuchel unsuccessfully tried to sign the Frenchman last summer but has now finally got his man, with Kounde due to undergo a medical within the next 48 hours, as per The Sun. Kounde has already spoken with Tuchel and even hopes he can join up with the Blues for the last few days of their pre-season tour of the USA.

The 23-year-old has agreed personal terms with the Blues and the club have reportedly agreed to pay Sevilla’s asking price of £51million plus £4m in add-ons. He is the second Sevilla centre-back to leave this summer after Diego Carlos completed his big-money switch to Aston Villa earlier in the window.

Kounde underwent surgery on a minor pelvic injury back in June, which initially put the transfer at risk. But Chelsea appear to have got their man despite looking at alternatives, including Max Kilman at Wolves and Manchester City defender Nathan Ake, who is set to stay at the Etihad Stadium.

Having came through the ranks at Bordeaux, Kounde joined Sevilla for £22million in 2019 after impressing in Ligue 1. He played an integral role as Sevilla lifted the Europa League in his first season at the club, starting the final as they beat Inter Milan 3-2. The defender has gone on to make 133 appearances for the Spanish club, scoring nine times.

Kounde is a right-sided centre-back who would likely replace Andreas Christensen – who joined Barcelona on a free transfer this summer – but he is also capable of playing as a right-back or wing-back. With Koulibaly likely to claim the central role in Chelsea’s back-three system, the Blues remain intent on adding a left-sided centre-back, too.

Talks have reportedly been held with Paris Saint-Germain over Presnel Kimpembe, while Chelsea are thought to be continuing to closely monitor RB Leipzig’s Josko Gvardiol. Both are capable of filling the position vacated on the left by Antonio Rudiger, who has joined Real Madrid after he left the Blues at the end of his contract last month.

After allowing Romelu Lukaku to return to Inter Milan on loan, Chelsea have added Sterling to their attack, having signed the winger from City in a deal which could rise to £50m. Meanwhile, Koulibaly became their second arrival on Saturday, taking the club’s spending up to around £80m. Should Kounde sign, further exits are anticipated.

Chelsea could allow Cesar Azpilicueta to depart for Barcelona this summer, while the Spanish giants also remain keen on acquiring Marcus Alonso. The pair could be the latest to join Xavi’s revolution as Barca seek to continue their seismic squad shake-up.
